2017 Dorado Kite Experience
"What is my dream day living in Dorado Beach? It starts with a little beachfront yoga stretch, then step-off surfing with Phil, a nice seaside breakfast, then wave kiting, then dinner with friends at the Resort. Phil's day would be biking the Cerro Gordo trail next door, and foiling a 20 mile upwinder that overlooks the 500 year old, El Morro Fort. Well, turns out, this is exactly what we do on a Monday for fun, and with the DKE you can have a taste of this too"

DKE: Kite. Connect. Experience

The 2nd Annual DKE: 5 Star Resort, an Epic Downwinder, dinner parties, local adventures, foiling, wave riding and freestyle in one spot with the Goodwinds Pro's, awesome group of kiters... do we need to say more?

It's 7AM and it's On

The waves are up and so is the Goodwinds team ready to take you out step off surfing. If it's windy, let's go kite. If it's flat, let's go paddle. If you are still sleepy and a little achy from all these activities, let's do some beachfront stretching... The DKE is like an all you can eat buffet of water sports awesomeness.

Unlimited Water-Time

We know there's no limit to your kite ambitions. Thus, students who are not yet independent riders will receive 1 to 1 coaching, with an instructor who will be available to them all day. Intermediate to advanced kiters will enjoy clinics, photo/video sessions and the opportunity to participate in the Cofresi Challenge, an epic down winder overlooking the 500 year old El Morro Fort.

EXPERIENCE DORADO BEACH

All in a place where the extraordinary is discovered each windy day; dinner parties, time sharing with other passionate kiteboarders, pure relaxation and exhilarating water sports await you with the Goodwinds DKE.

Phil Morstad

Owner of Goodwinds

In a few words: dare-devil, adventurous, free-spirit, responsible, husband, father

Not-so-mini-bio: Growing up in Colorado, I was into sports like snowboarding, motocross, mountain biking and any sport that would allow me to push myself to the extreme.  I also had done some wakeboarding and had a 2 line stunt kite. So, after moving to Puerto Rico to pursue my career as a pilot, and learning how incredible  the conditions are for kiting there, I bought some gear, and signed up for my first kitesurfing lesson. I always enjoyed being able to share with others my passion for sports and the outdoors, so when our friend Royce, offered us his school I jumped at the opportunity and the rest is history.

Goodwinds Owner (DKE Organizer)

Me in 10 words: foodie, nerd, dreamer, mommy, wife, ocean lover, athlete, entrepreneur.

Not-so-mini-bio: I was born and raised in Punta Las Marias, San Juan, PR. This area has been known for decades as one of the best places to windsurf and do water sports in the island. So with the help of my parents I started windsurfing when I was 8 and Kitesurfing when I was 15. Since then… all my life has revolved around wind, waves and sun! Weeeeell, not everything but almost, almost! Even though Im a beach bum at heart, I did graduate as Valedictorian from UPR’s Business School. But when I graduated I realized that even though I do love business and Marketing, a corporate job was not for me… so… there comes the water sports management company!

Also while in College, I had the most wonderful opportunity of competing for Puerto Rico for a whole year, including the 2004 Olympics in Athens, in the sport of windsurfing. Definitely, a great journey of self discovery, and of course, beautiful sailing around the world.

Thanks to Kitesurfing and Surfing, I met my husband, Phil and we bought the kite school from our good friends Royce and Kiko, along with Antoine and Julie in 2005.

Many waves, gusts and moons have gone by, and now we have what we firmly believe is the best kitesuf school and watersports center in Puerto Rico and our two girls Stella (5yrs) and Ryder (4yrs).

Andy Hurdman

Andy Hurdman

Instructor

Andy is considered a veteran in the Water sports world. Andy’s passion to constantly be around water lead him to be a competitor and teach in the modalities of wakeboarding, surfing, kitesurfing, sailing and even paddle boarding in waves.  Andy had been involved with kitesurfing since 1998 in Hawaii Maui near the origin of the sport.  Shortly after picking up kitesurfing he became sponsored and started traveling and competing around the globe. In 2003 Andy was winning most of his competitions and inventing his own tricks. Andy has been coaching kitesurfing and sharing his love of the sport for 15 years now. Currently residing in Puerto Rico, Andy is the Head instructor and the Kitesurf Program Manager at Goodwinds water sports center.

Among Andy’s accomplishments, he was featured as an athlete in the Discovery Channel’s kiteboarding series Catching Air where he became a video sensation by jumping ice-bergs in Alaska, competed and made the podium in many events including the world class Red Bull Kiteboarding event, and as product of his love for coaching, he has made many instructional videos that have helped kiters to improve for many years.

Andy’s style of kitesurfing is like no other; its diverse, technical and inventive. Non-kiters that see him on the water for the first time, have to stop to watch because his style is whimsical and fun. Experienced kiters sit in awe, because he just makes the difficult seem so easy and flawless.  But what makes Andy really special is that no matter how good he is, he is down to earth, extremely approachable and has a true passion to share his knowledge with others.

BEST Kiteboarding national team rider Austin Waclo began his journey in the kiteboarding world flying kites in the fields of Pennsylvania. After moving to San Francisco at 18, he worked as shop manager at KGB kiteboarding. With endless access to gear and wind, his progression was quick. For the next 3 summers he coached at Radikal Kiteboarding in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina- one of the best flat water sites in the world. There, he mastered a variety of riding: freestyle/wakestyle, strapless kitesurfing and foil boarding. Before moving to Puerto Rico in 2014, Austin spent his winters teaching snowboarding at Squaw Valley in Lake Tahoe, California cementing his ability to make any climate his playground. In his free time Austin surfs, Kiteboards, jumps off high sketchy rocks and searches for the sweetest secret spots on the island

OUR COACHES & TEAM
We firmly believe Goodwinds has one of the best teams in the planet. During the DKE, each participant's on the water experience will be manicured to match his or hers progression goals. Jon Beery

Jon Beery

When asked when he started on the water Jon says, “My parents used to tie my crib off to the handrails on the inside of their boat so I was suspended. That way I wouldn’t roll out when the boat heeled over.” Jon grew up in Darien, CT and has spent his lifetime on the water. He has raced dinghies and big boats across the country, was captain of his high school and college sailing teams, and has coached juniors and adults in dinghies, big boats, and kiteboarding at premier locations from Puerto Rico to Boston. He is a Certified Public Accountant who, after working in professional services in Boston for four years, decided to marry his passion for the water with his career, thus creating Next Level Watersports in Nantucket.

Jake Hoefler

Jake Hoefler

Jake is a thoroughbred D1 athlete turned avid kiteboarder and coach from Hampstead, NH. Jake tells the story of his first time kiteboarding with his dad when he was just twelve years old down on the Outer Banks. Cautiously launching the kiteboard he would get pulled downwind on his board and his dad would grab him by the back of his harness and pull him upwind to restart. He kept at it until it clicked. With the gear being much safer and user friendly these days it is much easier to teach. Jake is an incredible communicator who can break down the concepts behind kiteboarding into simple steps. After playing hockey for, and graduating from, Northeastern University he moved to the Outer Banks in North Carolina to pursue his passion and start Next Level Watersports with busines partner, Jon Beery. With thousands of hours on the water coaching Jake cannot wait to get you riding!

Colleen Carroll

Colleen Carroll

I grew up in the Northwest Region of the USA, planted just between the Puget Sound and the North Cascade mountain range.  Mentored by a family with an affliction for outdoor recreation, my love affair with the outdoors started at an early age.  Whether it was snowboarding, wakeboarding, mountain biking, windsurfing, hiking, rock climbing or even just climbing a tree, every free moment was spent outside, exploring the gifts of the Northwest.

After graduating early with a B.A. in Environmental Economics feeling uncertain as to a satisfying career path, I accepted a job managing a local kiteboard shop.  Following a two-year introduction to the kiteboard industry, I couldn’t wait to travel to some of the best kiteboarding spots in the world.  I was hooked.  I then moved to Hood River, Oregon, the epicenter of kiteboarding in the NW, but found that I needed to explore further.  So as fall came near, I headed off with my older brother to discover the NE coastline of Brazil and with the help of my amazing sponsors, haven’t stopped since.
